Ukraine - 4 July 2024
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported an increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine, highlighting the continued toll of the conflict on innocent lives. The report noted a rise in deaths and injuries due to the ongoing hostilities and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. The High Commissioner called for an immediate cessation of violence and for parties to adhere to international humanitarian law.
Rwanda / UK - 5 July 2024
The High Court in the UK ruled that civil servants are obligated to carry out the Conservative government's Rwanda deportation policy. The decision comes from a trade union legal action on behalf of civil servants, amid significant controversy and opposition, with many arguing the policy is inhumane and unlawful. The Conservative Party’s guidance says that if a minister decides to ignore a rule 39 indication from the European court of human rights (ECHR) to stop a person’s removal to Rwanda, “it is the responsibility of civil servants under the civil service code to implement that decision”
United States - 4 July 2024
The Supreme Court’s recent ruling on Donald Trump's immunity has significant repercussions for the former president, potentially affecting his legal battles and political future. The supreme court ruling on Monday held that US presidents are absolutely immune from criminal prosecution for what it described as “core executive functions” – constitutionally vested powers that, most notably, included discussions between a president and justice department officials.
US/Mexico/China - 4 July 2024
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated individuals based in Mexico and China linked to the Sinaloa Cartel. This move aimed to disrupt the cartel's operations and cut off their financial networks. Myanmar/International Court of Justice - 4 July 2024
